Artist's Description

Eleusis during 2000 B.C., was a Mycenaean fortified settlement where the worship of Gaia (Demeter), goddess of the renewal of nature and the germination of the crops. The Eleusinian Mysteries spread to Rome. In 170 AD the temple was sacked by the Sarmatians but was rebuilt by Marcus Aurelius.Roman emperor Theodosius closed the sanctuaries by decree and the site was wiped out when the barbarian Visigoth king Alaric accompanied with fanatic Christian monks desecrating the sacred site in 396 A.D. putting an end to mysteries that lasted over 2000 years.Elefsina,Attica, Greece

Andonis was born in Constantinople. I was awarded a B.A degree in Anthropology and History of Art from S.U.N.Y. at New Paltz, New York. I combine photography, archaeology, and nature. Recently, I reside in Greece, cooperating with publishing houses and magazines. I have published articles with photos covering from Neolithic, Cycladic, Minoan, Mycenaean, Bronze Age, Geometric, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic up to the Imperial Roman period.
